The Lentil

Lentils, sometimes referred to as pulses, are a type of plant called a legume. Beans, chickpeas, fresh peas, sugar snap peas and snow peas are also legumes. Known for their high levels of protein compared to beans, lentils bring a lot to the plate. While some legumes (think soybeans) are high in fat, lentils are very low in fat.It is about 40 cm (16 in) tall, and the seeds grow in pods, usually with two seeds in each.

Lentils are the daily food companion of every household in Bangladesh. In our country, lentil pulses are eaten in many ways along with the daily meal. Only red cotyledon type is used as food in Bangladesh, where it is boiled into soup-like dhal and eaten with flat bread (roti) or rice.
Lentils, like the majority of legumes, are high in protein, containing between 20.6% and 31.4% of protein. Lentils ranked top among the pulse crops in Bangladesh in terms of area coverage (40% of all pulse area) and production (45% of all pulse production)

Imports In 2022, Bangladesh imported $395M in Lentils Dried and Shelled, becoming the 3rd largest importer of Lentils Dried and Shelled in the world.
According to Bangladesh Import data, Bangladesh imported 2,339 shipments of Lentils during Mar 2023 to Feb 2024 (TTM). These imports were supplied by 221 foreign exporters to 455 Bangladesh buyers, marking a growth rate of 48% compared to the preceding twelve months. Within this period, in Feb 2024 alone, Bangladesh imported 241 Lentils shipments. This marks a year-on-year growth of 180% compared to Feb 2023, and a 24% sequential increase from Jan 2024.
